ST HELENS southpaw Ian Chantler won a battle of
grizzled old veterans when he outpointed late sub Kevin
Hayde over eight threes before a small crowd at the
Festival Hall.
MANCHESTER featherweight HENRY ARMSTRONG
eased back after an eight month layoff with a third
round stoppage of Coventry's COLIN LYNCH in the
scheduled eight threes main event at the European
Sporting Club.
MICHAEL MOORER kept his date with WBA champion
Virgil Hill intact when he overpowered Canadian champion
Danny Stonewalker in eight rounds at the Civic
Arena.
Providing Hill defeats Mike Peak in Bismarck in January, the
pair should meet in a unification bout with Moorer's WBO title on
the line at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas on March 8.
VICHY — December 15: Cardiff lightweight Marcel
Herbert remained unbeaten on the continent when the
22-year-old fought a tough and bruising draw with French
light-welterweight champion Jean-Pierre Scigliano over
eight rounds.
FORMER WBA lightweight champion, Ras-I-Bramble, hampered
by a dislocated shoulder, dropped a unanimous
10-round decision to up-and-coming Philadeiphian Tony
Martin in a ruggedly-entertaining light-welterweight bout at
Resorts International.
A QUALITY Class A division in which the talented Gary Mayor did the
double was the high spot of the Daily Star Junior ABA championships at
York Hall, but there was contention in Class B when Danny Lear and
Peter Berry were both disqualified in the 54 kg final. Dean Pithie and
Naseem Hamed won their second Junior ABA title in 1990, as did Paul
Webster and James Branch.
With 14 boxers in the finals, London found the going tough only ending
up with five champions, a total matched by the North East Counties with
five titleholders.
