ERROL CHRISTIE'S hopes of realising his
potential look firmly dashed after his eight
round points loss to Ian Strudwick at the
Festival Hall. Christie, who gained a Guinness
Book of Records entry for being the
most titled amateur ever, looks less likely
to enter the boxing record books as the
holder of a professional title — even at
area level.
IT REALLY is a pity to see the sorry state that Japanese boxing
is in. At one time they produced great fighters such as
Fighting Harada, Hiroyuki Ebihara, Masao Ohba and Yoko
Gushiken, and had a regular supply of world champions such
as Kuniaki Shibata, Hiroshi Kobayashi, Sho Saijyo, Ishimatsu
Suzuki and others.
JUST celebrating their second year in action, Newport
Pagnell ABC in the motorway town of the same name, look
to have a promising future. Club Secretary Vic Wright
(senior) and trainers Vic Wright (junior) and Ian Ford have
been running the Club in the town's Youth Club since it
started and now have some twenty youngsters in training.
Still only 24 years old, Vic Wright is toying with the idea
of boxing again next season in the heavyweight division.
Vic was Home Counties middleweight champion in 1984
when boxing for Vauxhall Motors in Luton and reached the
ABA quarter-finals that year losing to Southampton's
Jimmy Peters.
IT IS nice to see the rave reviews for JACOBIN YOMA the new French
super-featherweight champion from Cayenne in French Guyana. His draw with
Regilio Tuur and his upset win over Pierre Lorcy have made him a local hero, with
the fans packing his fights and poems being composed of his exploits. Yoma is
pictured above left with manager Jacques Chinon, Ihe former French middleweight
champion who lost to Tony Sibson for the EBU title here in 1982.
