TEXAN Robert Quiroga took the IBF super-flyweight title
from Colombian Juan Polo Perez with an unanimous
points decision at Sunderland's Crowtree Centre.
The 26-year-old South American was making the first
defence of the championship he took from Elly Pical of
Indonesia six months ago.

THE CRUISERWEIGHT division got off to a sputtering start
almost 10 years ago and is still limping along like a car
with a bad carburettor and three flat tyres.
To begin with, the World Boxing Council was in labour
for almost four months trying to give birth to the bastard
division. Its first attempt to crown a cruiserweight champion
failed when Marvin Camel and Mate Parlov struggled
to a 15-round draw on December 8, 1979.

ADRIAN CAREW achieved what he set out to do three months ago when he advanced to
Wednesday's Royal Albert Hall finals with a powerful second round stoppage of
Welshman Michael Smyth at the Norbreck Castle Hotel.
The Lynn southpaw coasted through the opening round avoiding Smyth's long
punches. The Rhoose welter was caught with fast jabs and combinations of speed and
accuracy, that lacked telling power as Carew eased into top-gear. The round was fairly
even as Smyth did not stop forging forward, but it was obvious Carew was only touching
with his punches and exploring possibilities.

TEENAGERS might rule, OK! ADRIAN CAREW, 19, and PAUL
INGLE, 17, have kept a relatively flat ABA year on the boil.
The Commonwealth Games and the lure of the professional
side have dealt the championships a hefty blow over the last
twelve months.
Only JOHN WILLIAMS, beaten at feather, was a finalist
last year while the only other former finalist, KEVIN
McCORMACK, won at super-heavy in 1988.
