ACCORDING to Ambrose Mendy, business agent for Nigel
Benn, the former Commonwealth champion will face
Roberto Duran for the WBC middleweight title in late April
or early May. Mendy says that he has reached agreement
with Bob Arum and Barry Hearn, who will co-promote the
light at a football ground in Britain: Manchester United,
Spurs and Arsenal are all said to be interested.

THERE HAVE been so many good pros who go through
their careers, never winning a title, taking on the best
and giving them all hard, close contests. Such a man is
Sanderline Williams, now 31 years old, whom ITV
viewers saw taking Nigel Benn to a split decision. Too
close for comfort, yet Williams goes back to comparative
obscurity, and ITV announced that Benn would be
meeting Roberto Duran for the WBC title at the end of
April or beginning of May.

SOUTH KOREA'S Sung-kil Moon became a world champion
for the second time when he was given a controversial
technical decision over defending WBC superflyweight
champion Nana Yaw Konadu of Ghana at the
Korean Exhibition Centre in the southern part of the city.
Moon was cut over the left eye following a clash of heads
in the third round - and at the end of the ninth referee
Tony Perez ruled him unfit to
continue.

BOXING heads into the 1990's with the possibility of world
titles being spread on an increasingly international basis.
By the end of the decade Russia, and some of the other
Eastern European States, could produce their first homegrown
world champion, and, in view of the political
upheavals in the Communist world, we could even have a
return to professional boxing in Cuba during the decade
which would have a tremendous impact.

NASEEM HAMED opened up with switch-hitting combinations
of speed and accuracy to halt Sandy's Richard
Izzard in the 48 kgs NABC class A finals, held for the first
time in the echo-heavy Festival Hall.
Hcimed now has the power to complement his style and
gold-gown image something he clearly displayed by
moving straight out and tagging lzzard from the opening
bell. Hamed (St Thomas) scored on the move with either
hand, from either stance and was powerfully impressive
when he set his feet fractionally closer and whipped in
three and four shots of hurtful accuracy.
