IN THE space of two days last month we had three shows
which included twelve fighters imported to fight British
opponents. Eleven of them lost and nine of them were
stopped. The only winner was Henry Maske and he was
really a "house" fighter this time. Perhaps British fighters
are pricing themselves out of these spots, but it can't be
good for the game.
WELSH welterweight champion John Davies returned this
week from another successful working trip to South Africa. The
26-year-old Davies, from the Colin Breer camp in Swansea,
scored a spectacular 10th and final round victory over highlyrated
Pfumsel Madakan.
KIRKLAND LAING lost his European welterweight crown on a unanimous
12-round decision to Patrizio Oliva in the Casino ... anonymous
decision, I should say, as there was no fight at all.
The defeat — which has cost Laing the chance of a world title fight with
WBC champion Maurice Blocker — had manager Mickey Duff complaining
bitterly about the standard of refereeing and the timekeeping after several
rounds over-ran considerably. Laing simply said: "Oliva was clever".
It was a bad experience for Laing in Campione. I was at ringside when he
looked robbed against Nico La Rocca in Italy last year, but this time, even
though the referee's handling of the fight was bad and Oliva was very
tricky, Laing lost his crown because of his inability to cope with a
situation he had already experienced.
REPTONS young lions roared to yet another prestigious result in Europe when, from a
team of six, they won five gold medals in the 12th annual Raufossturnering-Bryan Cup.
The East Enders have done better numerically before in thhs tournament, but regard
this as their best year ever pro rata of entries. In 1986 they won eight golds and two silvers
(there are no bronzes). In 1987 it was five golds and three silvers, and in 1988 four golds
and four silvers. On their first year of entry, 1985, it was three golds and one silver.
