BUSTER DOUGLAS' outrageous treatment by the WBA and
WBC last week quite properly earned him worldwide
sympathy, and it was only the weight of public opinion that
forced those worthies to abandon their shameful attempt
to deny him the title he had won fairly.
GARY STRETCH picked up the World Boxing Council
International light-middleweight title in six rounds against
a woefully limited Ramon A l e g r e of Argentina in t h e small
hall at the London Arena.
But the overwhelming impression afterwards was that
the 24-year-old St Helens southpaw still has plenty more to
bring out of himself.
MARK REEFER'S days as a super-featherweight came to an end along with his European
title challenge, when he was stopped in the eighth round at the Brentwood Centre by
experienced Frenchman Daniel Londas.
Londas (9st 21bs) proved a worthy, skilful champion. Tight in defence and efficient in
offence, he never put a foot wrong as he sliced up the Bethnal Green challenger with
accurate hooks and crosses.
THE most damning thing I can say about Johnny Nelson is that his
pathetic display against WBC cruiserweight champion Carlos De Leon
has virtually cured me of a belief I've held for nearly 25 years.
I have always thought it the height of unfairness that when a title
fight ends in a draw, the champion is deemed to have retained his title.
A CAPACITY crowd at the Top Rank Suite saw England
international John Armour (St Mary's, Chatham) hold on
to his Southern Counties flyweight title after an allsouthpaw
battle with Fareham's Andy Smith.
The thrilling contest had the audience cheering and
chanting, either for clcissy performer Armour, or the
courageous Smith, who never once stopped trying.
VINCE ROSE eased into this year's London
semi-finals with a revenge win over Hanwell's
Omar Newman in the welterweight final of
the North West divisional London championships
at the Porchester Hall.
COMMONWEALTH heavyweight champion Derek Williams
received a double blow when the Boxing Board of Control
withdrew sanctioning of his double title showdown with
British champion Gary Mason.
