FORMER British cruiseweight champion Tee Jay's claim
that he is ready to challenge for the world title seemed
rather hollow as he made hard work of outpointing a
jaded-looking Dave Garside in the eight round main event •
on this Seconds Out show at the Lads Club.
Jay (Notting Hill Gate) started like an express train,
steaming into his Hartlepool opponent and sending him
crashing to the canvas with a right hook to the head, early
in the first round.

SUGAR RAY LEONARD will have Emanuel Steward
in his corner when he challenges Terry Norris for
the WBC light-middleweight title next February.
Steward confirmed that he will be working with
the former five-time champion after a friendship
which has lasted nearly 20 years, despite Steward
having managed Leonard's arch-rival Thomas
Hearns.

BIG underdog Gilbert Baptist was just too strong for the
IBFs number seven ranked middleweight contender, unbeaten
Ron 'Tequilla' Collins and he copped a split
10-round decision at the Boutwell Auditorium.
Collins, a speedy southpaw in the Pernell Whitaker mold,
had been one of boxing's best kept secrets. After winning
20 straight fights and scoring seven KOs, this was to be his
'coming out party'.

PITTSBURGH super-middleweight Carl Sullivan made a
big mistake when he insulted the United States Postal
Service prior to his bout with Tony "The Punching
Postman" Thornton at Harrah's
Thornton, a tough enough customer under normal
circumstances, took exception to Carl's pre-bout comments
and "hand cancelled" Sullivan via a ninth-round
stoppage.

PAUL HODKINSON has been voted Best Boxer of 1990 by London
Ex-Boxers' Association members. The other two in the final frame
f were Billy Hardy and Dave McAuley. So Paul will be coming to
London on November 23 to receive the Dave Crowley Memorial Belt
at LEBA's Annual Dinner/Dance, and told me: "I feel very proud to
have been chosen by the votes of members of the boxing profession,

who have been through it all themselves."
The Johnny Kent Award for Best Boxer in the London area goes to
Tony Collins in a close vote over Mickey Hughes, with Sean Murphy
not far behind.
