Boxing News Magazine 1990 Memorabilia
THERE WAS plenty of fierce action surrounding the Vinny
Pazienza-Greg Haugen rubber match. Unfortunately,
practically all of it took place either before or after the
Trump Plaza sponsored light-welterweight scrap held at
the Convention Hall ballroom.
Inside the ring, things were disappointingly tame as
Pazienza boxed his way to a unanimous 10-round decision
BOXING has been going through a lean period in Nigeria with their best boxers such as
Joe Lasisi and Akeem Anifowoshe fighting in America. On this basis, the show at the
Sports Hall in Lagos on July 6 constituted a revival. In the main bout policeman
Sunday Okolie came on strong in the late rounds to halt Sarafa King. Okolie picked
up the vacant featherweight title
In other bouts, Sammy Clay knocked out Ghana's Billy Kwame in round six at
light-welterweight and Sheu Yussuf knocked out Waide Bello in round one for the
Lagos State middleweight title.
WELL, what an amazing feat. 36,38, 40 who cares what age
he is, Dennis Andries has done it!
Making history is hard enough, but to make history for
British boxing is a tremendous achievement.
To me it's the same as England winning the World Cup a
record amount of times. Could you imagine the headlines
and what coverage there would be? interviews,
television specials, chat shows, the goals shown
time and time again etc.
THE GOOD news. ITV have secured the Nigel
Benn-Iran Barkley bout, which will be
screened live from Las Vegas on August 18 at
10.05pm. After the recent fierce competition
from the satellite firms, it will be great to see a
major contest that will be available to
everyone.
I would imagine that one of the most popular questions being asked in pub
quizzes up and down the country in 1988 was the one about the name of
the boxer with a record number of seven ABA titles. The answer, of course,
was John Lyon. In 1987 Lyon had equalled the 94-year old record of six
title wins by Joe Steers and then went on to make his own boxing history
in the two following years by winning his seventh and eighth ABA titles.
The names of Lyon and Steers are perhaps easily remembered, but what
about the boxers who nearly achieved record-breaking status by winning
four or five ABA titles? There are 21 altogether!
Frank Parks, Rube Warnes, George Baker, the two Mallins (Harry and
Fred), and Tommy Pardoe are the pre-war amateur champions with five
ABA title wins. Since 1944, when the championships started up again, Dick
McTaggart, Terry Waller and George Gilbody made the record books with
the same number of wins.
