THE two most eloquent and succinct comments on Lloyd
Honeyghan's Wembley catastrophe came from Americans.
Dan Duva, a central part of Mark Breland's management
team, said: "Mark deserves all the credit, whoever it was he
fought out there."
ABC TV commentator Alex Wallau summarised it
perfectly when he said: "What you saw were rounds ten, 11
and 12 of the Marlon Starling fight"
STREAKING Jemal Hinton overcame a thumb in the eye to
stop rugged Freddy Hernandez 36 seconds into the seventh
round of a scheduled 12-round super-bantamweight bout at
the Palace.
While the bout was billed as a defence of Hinton's synthetic
WBC Continental Americas belt, there is nothing phony about
Hinton, who appears to have unlimited potential.
WHAT will boxing history remember from Saturday, February 17,1990? Well, the story so
lar is like this; there was a tall, thin black French fighter, whose manager Giancarlo Centa
- based in La Seyne-sur-Mer in the South ol France - believed was a talented fighter.
Martin Camara, the lighter in question, didn't turn out to be too much, it seemed,
beaten twice by France's new European light-middle champion Gilbert Dele, and showing
his limitations in London.
THE North East Counties ABA finals at the Leisure Centre produced a number of shocks -
the biggest being the defeat of last year's Wembley featherweight winner Peter
Richardson.
Now up at lightweight, Richardson (Phil Thomas SOB, Middlesbrough) was stopped on
a cut eye in the third round by Jimmy Phelan (St Paul's, Hull).
Peter, just back from the Commonwealth Games, was exempt from the divisional round,
TUNBRIDGE WELLS heavyweight Keith Inglis took less
than the scheduled distance to earn himself a place in the
English ABA quarter-finals when he stopped Nottingham's
Gary Williams in the third round in the Bewbush Leisure
Centre.
