SOUTHERN Area featherweight champion Johnny B.
Good squeezed to a half-point, 10-round win over archrival
Tim Driscoll in their furiously competitive "decider"
at the York Hall.
Driscoll beat Good for the vacant title in 1988, Good
made it 1-1 by taking the belt from Driscoll last year —
and, though not as thrilling as the first two meetings, this
third battle was just as bitterly fought. It also headlined an
excellent value for money show.
SOLIHULL light-welterweight TONY SWIFT jabbed his
way to a half-point win over Sheffield switch-hitter
DARREN MOUNT on a European Sporting Club charity
show at the Kings Hall.
EVERY NOW and then, things go exactly as expected -
even in boxing. This was one of those times.
In what amounted to little more than a million-dollar
workout, Evander Holyfield dispatched game but outgunned
Seamus McDonagh 44 seconds into the fourth
round of a scheduled 12-rounder at Convention Hall.
CROYDON EBA will be sending a full coachload of 49 to the
Sussex EBA Convention on June 10 at the King Alfred Suite,
Hove, and it is hoped that the attendance at this function
will lead to a revival of Sussex EBA, which has been going
through a difficult period.
Ivan Delvin was at the Croydon meeting on the last
Sunday in May, and told me he has already sold many
copies of his Souvenir Programme for the Convention,
which contains his concise condensed History of Susex
EBA. This interesting brochure will ol course be on sale at
the Convention.
EASTERN Counties lightweight champion Steve Garner
(Dereham) bounced back after his not-so-surprising defeat
by finalist Billy Schwer (Luton Irish) in the ABA championships
to comfortably outpoint former junior star Mark
Florian (Royal British Legion, Bury St. Edmunds) on his
club's last show of the season at the Community Centre.
