AFTER his flawed dismissal of disappointing Mexican
veteran Eduardo Montoya, a safer route to the top may
be selected for European featherweight champion Paul
Hodkinson than a showdown with a showman extraordinaire
Jorge Paez.
Hodkinson brushed aside 30-year-old Montoya in 29
seconds of the third round before a sparse crowd at the
G-MEX Centre, but not before finding himself on the
canvas in the first.
HARLOW'S Trevor Smith joins the list of very able
fighters to have been bamboozled by the wizardry of
British welterweight champion Kirkland Laing, who
retained his title with a sixth-round stoppage at the
Grosvenor House Hotel.
TONY LOPEZ, the former IBF super
featherweight champion, moved a step
closer to regaining his title by stopping
rugged Sylvester Kennon on a cut at
2:10 of the second round in their scheduled
ten at the Arco Arena.
IN this year's second spectacular upset, virtual unknown Terry Norris conquered John
Mugabi in the first round to take the Ugandan's WBC super-welterweight ( l i s t ) title in
front of a stunned crowd at the Sundome.
It was a result comparable with Douglas' win over Tyson: Mugabi was a 5-1 favourite
and enjoyed massive support in his adopted hometown of Tampa. Yet, he was devastated
by a sharp and confident challenger who showed the hallmark ol a genuine one-shot
puncher.
ON November 6, 1981, Renaldo Snipes did not produce one of the great
upsets in boxing history, but he came, oh, so close! That evening in
Pittsburgh, Snipes, a huge underdog, crashed a perfectly timed right hand
to the jaw of heavyweight champion Larry Holmes. Holmes went down,
staggered up to his feet, and had great difficulty surviving that seventh
round. In the 11th round, the referee stopped the match in Holmes' favor,
although many felt that it should have been allowed to continue.
That Renaldo Snipes came close to becoming heavyweight champion of
the world is no fluke. From the start of the 1980's, until the end of the
decade, Snipes has been one of boxing's most exciting performers. Now
with the new decade underway, it is a tribute to Snipes' perseverance and
ability that he is still a contender for championship honors.
EX-MARINE Terry Anderson scored a quick knockout
as J o e Adams was counted out after the bell at the end of
the first round of their fight in Jacksonville on February 2.
The count continued as per Florida rules.
Anderson, a 30 year old heavyweight, has 19 wins in 21
fights and 17 stoppages. It was the third fight in seven days
for Adams. In a light-middleweight bout colourful Johnny
"San Juan" Gutierrez stopped John Dillion in two.
Heavyweight hog farmer Mike Cohen took only 62
seconds to stop Jimmy Marable in Hilton Head on
February 10. Mike is the local favourite
REPTON's James Branch completed his schoolboy boxing
years by winning his third national title with a very
tight points victory over Penna's Lee Taylor at the
Assembly Rooms.
Branch beat Taylor in last year's final, but this time the
Welsh southpaw came close in the second round to
reversing the decisions when a right hook clearly hurt
Branch, who was also cut on his left eyebrow.
