BEATEN in his last two outings and currently without a
title, Glasgow's Gary Jacobs scored a much-needed win
when substitute Pascal Lorcy of France was beaten on a
cut in the second of a scheduled 10-rounder at the
Latchmere Leisure Centre.
BEST scheduled fight on the undercard
is a welterweight showdown between
former Commonwealth and WBC International
champion GARY JACOBS and
MICKEY HUGHES of St Pancras.
FUELED by a tremendous desire and equipped with menacing power, Londoner Nigel
Benn blasted his way to the WBO middleweight title when he crushed New York tough
guy Doug "The Cobra" De Witt to defeat after only 44 seconds of the eighth round at
the Circus Maximus Theatre at the Caesars casino hotel.
BETHNAL GREEN - April 5: Reigning Junior ABA champion Stephen Smith
(Repton) returned to the ring and eased through the motions before
stepping up the pace and stopping Dagenham's Jason Nunn in the third
during a heavily-depleted North East Divs at York Hall, writes STEVE
BUNCE.
Smith, who has not boxed since November, shot out his jab and moved
with speed and confidence before lifting his workrate in the second. A long
left dropped Nunn, who struggled up at six, but was under fire when the ref
jumped in.
The low entry meant only four bouts, and with no supporting contests or
novice comp it was a short evening for the dedicated only.
Losing schoolboy finalist Peter Swinney (Repton) returned to his
winning ways with a close decision over West Ham's Guy Wild in a
contrast of styles that mixed Guy's long jabs with Peter's bustling motions.
A PHONE call from former middleweight champion
Johnny Sullivan. He and his wife June are
very proud of their daughter Lorraine. She's 14
years old, and has just finished a stint as principal
dancer in the Chorley Little Theatre's production
of Brigadoon. A great future is predicted. Johnny
was a bit useful on his Teet, too.
