Boxing News Magazine 1990  History

Manchester's Maurice Coore (12st 1 libs) took his fight
with Nicky Piper (12st 4lbs) at two days' notice and
looked to be in for an early bath as he hit the deck from the
first punch the Cardiff man threw.
He got up at six and boxed his way back in and managed
to share the round on my card. Referee Roy Francis made
it 58'/2 points apiece after six quality three minute rounds,
much to the chagrin of Piper, who looked to have done
enough to win.

OLD warrior Roy Skeldon attempts to defy the years one
more time as he defends his Midlands Area lightheavyweight
title against Birmingham's J o h n Foreman
before what promises to be a large crowd at Edgbaston's
Tower Ballrooms on Monday. Promoter Pat Cowdell also
bills it as an eliminator for the British title held by Tom
Collins.

BRICKLAYER Andy Morgan, who used to kick opponents
in the ring instead of punching them, wants to return to
orthodox boxing. The 27-year-old Port Talbot light welterweight
has asked the Welsh area council to restore the
licence he lost when the British Boxing Board of Control
banned him from fighting a year ago because of his
kick-boxing activities.

PROMISING Berry light middleweight Alan Richards literally
weighed down with ankle trouble. Security' guard
Richards, 23, dropped a 301bs. weight while training in
Cardiff for a fight against Londoner Tony Velinor. It
narrowly missed his feet but bounced off the floor and on to
his right ankle which is now badly bruised and swollen. The
injury forced Richards to withdraw from the Velinor bout,
and will keep him out of action for at least a month.

WEST HAM'S Shaun Gray is an impressive triple champion;
NABC, Schoolboy and now Junior ABA finals in an
unbelievable total of 184 seconds. 184 seconds of careful,
accurate power. Gray was crowned Junior ABA champion
after 52 seconds of the first, as Scott Arter slumped into
the ropes at York Hall.
