Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia

ARDWICK LADS ABC has been forced to
close its old gym. Already flood-damaged,
the roof fell in after a downpour, injuring a
cleaner. The building had to be closed.
But the club will survive. Droylsden ABC
has kindly let Ardwick's boxers use their
facilities while the gym searches for a new
home. Manchester City FC has saved the
day, finding them a site, which does need
renovating. There for about two or three
years, while the area round the stadium is
regenerated, with new sports centres on
the way the gym will ultimately be housed
there.
The boxing club has been running since
1894. In more recent history, John and Joe
Murray [pictured] spent a season boxing
there, Rhys Roberts started with them
when he was 11 years old and many more
have learned their skills at the club.

THE proliferation of titles allows the
status of 'world' champion to be
bestowed on those unworthy but it also
denies good fighters due recognition.
A good example might be Viacheslav
Senchenko, who tomorrow (Friday
August 26) defends the WBA
welterweight belt against Venezuela's
Marco Antonio Avendano in his native
Ukraine.

Alexander Povetkin and Ruslan
Chagaev inside Efurt's Messenhalle on
Saturday (August 27) is a worthwhile
duel between two leading contenders.
Of course, we should ignore the 'title'
and concentrate on the matchup but, to
the ever-confused boxing fan dizzy with
an expanding circus of champions, such
ignorance isn't easy.

IT was far from exciting but kudos to
rising light-middle Demetrius Andrade,
who passed his toughest test with
ease, cruising to a lo-round unanimous
decision over Grady Brewer at the
Horseshoe Casino.
Andrade didn't win over the fans
but did catch the eye of ringsiders
like super-middle champ Andre Ward,
who commended the young fighter on
"dominating the fight without taking too
much punishment."
