Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia
I WAS impressed with Sam Webb in his fight with Prince
Arron. He showed not only what it takes to be a champion,
but how much the British title and Lonsdale Belt means to
fighters in this country, by giving 110 per cent.
I WOULD like to appeal to readers for any
information they may have about Ezzard
Charles - in particular his 1956 fighting visit
to London. I am working on a short piece
about the former heavyweight champion
and any information that older readers or
members of the boxing fraternity are able to
share would be much appreciated.
Up to now I have been able to make
contact with Charles' former personal
secretary and with his father Ezzard
Charles II.
After McGuigan roared to a loftus Road victory over
the long-standing WBA featherweight in 1985, for BN
editor Harry Mullan wrote: "One would surely have to
go all the way back to the legendary Henry Armstrong
to find a featherweight who threw quite so many
punches per round."
OSCAR DE LA HOYA has asked for
privacy after checking into a rehab clinic
in California with substance abuse cited
asthe reason. The Golden Boy boss and
former six-division title-holder missed
Bernard Hopkins' win over
Jean Pascal at the weekend as
a result.
ENGLAND amateur middleweight
Frank Buglioni is turning pro with
Mark Tibbs as his trainer. Buglioni
lost a close one to John Dignum
in this year's ABA semi-finals and
will look to make his paid debut in
September or October.
Buglioni has been working with
Tibbs for two months, marking
the end of an impressive amateur
career spent with Bethnal Green's
Repton club, the same organisation
his trainer came from. Frank is
currently in negotiations to find
a promoter and Tibbs believes
whoever takes Buglioni on must
have a TV deal.
