Boxing News Magazine 2011  History

KEITH Mayo is to be commended for
the introduction of live shows in this part
of the world, but I have to question the
behaviour of a certain kind of "fan" that
seems to be prevalent at these shows.
During his last promotion on September
30, it was my misfortune to witness the foul,
raucous and drunken manner in which some
of these spectators conducted themselves
during the contests that they deigned it
worthy to watch when they weren't supping
in the bar. Most of them only left the bar
for the top of the bill contest featuring local
boxer Kelvin Young, who was fighting for
the British Masters belt.
It was Young's first 10 rounder in a
10-fight record, yet his so-called supporters
were calling for him to knock his opponent
out within minutes of entering the ring!
Just what do these fans want when
watching a boxing match? Shouting out
foul and abusive threats to anyone they
don't agree with doesn't belong in a sport
which should be appreciated for its science
and courage. Some of us like to witness a
fair contest and even score each fight. The
fighters taking part deserve better.

I WAS delighted to see BN focus attention
on the remarkable Chris Sanigar (BN Oct
6), who attended our 50th anniversary night
at Denbigh ABC in November 2009.
Chris drove from Bristol all the way
to North Wales in the pouring rain to
enlighten us with his wonderful stories of
a lifetime in boxing and of his wonderful
relationship with our senior trainer, and
veteran of over more than amateur contests,
Sparrow Harrison. Chris then drove
the whole way home after talking and
answering questions for over an hour and
a half. He knew he had bowel cancer - we
found out a week later.

TYSON FURY will defend his
Commonwealth heavyweight title
against unbeaten Canadian Nevan
Pajkic at Trafford Park's Event City
in Manchester, The 34-year-old
challenger comes in with a record to
match the champion, 16-0, but with
just five early finishes.
"No Surrender" is a decent
opponent for the busy British king,
although this will represent his first
foray out of Canada. Recent Furyvictim
Nikolai Firtha, Jason Gavern
and Johnnie White are the leading
names on his victory list. Leading
the way on the undercard is Adnan
Amar's English welterweight
defence against James Flinn,
a fascinating crossroads superbantamweight
clash between
Willie Casey and Kid Galahad,
plus the return of former British
light-welterweight champion Lenny
Daws.
