Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia

FOR Alexander Povetkin's world title
match with Ruslan Chagaev we had a
short camp, actually only three weeks
and two days to prepare. He wasn't in
top physical shape but I thought we did
a very good job to get ready for a world
title fight against a former champion, a
southpaw, in that amount of time. We
got through it under extremely difficult
circumstances and we won the world title.
People should understand that taking
over a fighter at a certain point in his
career and making changes to try and
bring him to the next level is a process.
A process does not deliver immediate
gratification, it takes time. And we're
getting there.

MARTIN MURRAY v Felix Sturm was
a fair draw but it raises the question, why
are promoters not putting together some
blockbuster fights between the three top UK
middleweights?
For the last two-three years Darren Barker
and Matthew Macklin seem to be missing
each other while flying up behind is a stronger
and seemingly hungrier fighter in Murray.
Now that Macklin is in the US with Lou
DiBella it does seem we will never know who
was the best from our shores at this weight.

GLENN FOOT has been spared
jail for the sake of his boxing
career. The 24-year-old had been
convicted for the February assault
of a bouncer in Sunderland.
At the Newcastle Crown Court,
Judge Guy Whitburn sentenced
Foot to a community order for six
months with 100 hours' unpaid
work, a three-month night time
curfew and £1,000 compensation.
"I don't want to be party to the
destruction of your career," said
Whitburn to Foot while passing
sentence. "It is a matter entirely for
you. It is a hazardous profession
but nonetheless you seem to show
you are rather good at it."

ITALY'S Carel Sandon, the nephew
of former middleweight champion
Sumbu Kalambay, is reported
to be in a coma after attempting
suicide. The 28-year-old lightweight,
1 4 - 1 (5), has been suffering from
depression and had not fought since
losing his unbeaten record to Samir
Ziani in a July upset.
