Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia
The undisputed highlight of Ricky's career was
toppling the great Kostya Tszyu inside a beautifully
boisterous MEN Arena, but don't forget the wins over
Carlos Maussa (or the left hook he ploughed into his
jaw), Luis Collazo, Paul Malignaggi.Juan Urango.Juan
Lazcano, Vince Phillips and Jose Luis Castillo,
ESTEEMED boxing scribe George
Kimball has passed away at the age
of 67 in his Manhattan home; he
was diagnosed with cancer in 2005.
The great wordsmith, who was a
radical poet in the 1960s, covered
boxing for the last 30 years with
the Boston Globe and the Boston
Phoenix. According to those closest
to him, Kimball chose to ignore his
disease rather than fight it, but it
certainly triggered a prolific writing
spree that contained some of his
finest work. Perhaps his most
famous, and revered, piece was his
2008 book. Four Kings: Leonard,
Hagler, Hearns, Duron and the last
great era of boxing, which sold
45,000 copies around the world.
He is survived by his wife Dr Marge
Marash, his mother Susan, daughter
Darcy and son George.
FORMER heavyweight contender
Dominic Negus has opened a new
gym in Chingford. The Sparta 300
Health and Fitness Club attracted
nearly 200 people on Sunday,
including former world champions
Tim Witherspoon and Richie
Woodhall, and is open to pros,
amateurs and anyone looking to
keep fit.
FLU SETBACK
MICHAEL KATSIDIS has recovered
from flu and began training for his
August 13 encounter with Mexico's
Michael Lozada. The illness forced
the Australian to cancel a media
sparring day on the Cold Coast
but he was well enough to spar
national lightweight king Brett
Smith, and his challenger Mick
Shaw.
