Boxing News Magazine 2011 History
Smokin' Joe's popularity was evident
last January at the Hudson Theater in New
York, at the premiere of the television
series Lights Out. Lennox Lewis, Larry
Holmes, Wladimir Klitschko and
Micky Ward all received a nice ovation,
but when Frazier's name was announced
the crowd rose and gave him a standing
ovation.
Frazier is acknowledged as an all-time
great heavyweight champion, but barely
makes it into top 10 on most lists in which
Ali is ranked first. However, it can be
argued that no one else but Joe could have
beaten Ali that night.
Forty years is a long time, but the night
still shines bright and remains an
incredible experience for all of us who
were lucky enough to have witnessed it.
IT looks like finally the I's are dotted and
the t's are crossed and we now have
Wladimir Klitchsko-David Haye for the
world heavyweight championship and I
for one cannot wait.
I sincerely hope that the wave of
patnotism that will sweep through the
country doesn't swell chests to the point
where people think Haye is in for a walk in
the park. Far from it. This is the Londoner's
toughest challenge and one he has a real
chance of winning but also a very real
chance of losing.
Wladimir, for all his questionable
opponents, has the skills and power that
the WBA champion is going to feel first
hand.
DANNY WILLIAMS, the 37-year-old
"Brixton Bomber", a cult hero in the
United Kingdom for his unpredictability,
returned to the ring in Germany last
weekend on a small hall show promoted
by the German Boxing Association
(GBA), a splinter group from Bund
Deutscher Berufsboxer (BDB), the EBU
recognised organisation.
He weighed 19st 51bs at the
Sportpalast venue in Bielfield whereas
his opponent, Frank Kary Roth, came
in at 14st 7lbs. Roth's record now reads
two wins against 22 losses with two
draws.
KELLY PAVLIK, the former
middleweight champion, is set to
return on the May 7 Manny
Pacquiao-Shane Mosley bill. The
Youngstown, Ohio, puncher, who
will be having his first fight since
completing rehab for alcohol
abuse, could be paired with
unbeaten but unknown Texan
ALFONSO LOPEZ, who has
stopped 16 of his 21 victims
against no losses.
Pavlik, 36-2 (30), has not
fought since losing his titles to
Sergio Martinez 11 months ago.
