Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia

IT'S great that Cello Renda is returning after over 18 months
out Heavy-handed, game and thoroughly likeable, Cello has
been missed. I'll never forget his three-round war with Martin
Murray in the Prizefighter final or the double knockdown
against Paul Samuels. With the Woodhalls now providing the
ring smarts to go with his numbing power, Cello really can
come again in the wide-open middleweight division.

It's no exaggeration to suggest that if Roy Jones
had retired after dominating John Ruiz in 2003 to
clinch the WBA heavyweight title, he would today
be regarded as one of the greatest fighters who
ever lived. Since then he has lost seven of 13 and
continues to ignore the lessons of boxing history by
fighting on.

TYSON FURY will now take on
heavyweight gatekeeper Nicolai
Firtha on September 17 inside
Belfast's King's Hall, topping a
card that includes Junior Witter
and Willie Casey. Promoter Mick
Hennessy stated there were "a few
complications" with Norway's Lief
Larson but was happier with Firtha
given his superior experience. The
32-year-old American, 20-8-1 (8),
has lost to Alexander Povetkin and
Tye Fields but upset Tony Grano in
2010.

PAT PETRONEIU, the man who
managed Marvin Hagler throughout
his professional career, has died
aged 89. Pat and his younger
brother Goody were attracted to
the fight game from an early age
and their dream to open a gym
in their Brockton, Massachusetts
hometown was realised in the early
1970s.
They really struck gold when
Hagler walked in proclaiming
his desire to be a fighter. They
guided him to the top of the
world middleweight mountain and
created a winning team the three
called, "The Triangle".
Pat tried to get Hagler's 1987
12-round contest with Sugar Ray
Leonard switched to 15 rounds and,
when he couldn't get the Leonard
camp to agree, left the decision
with Marvin.
"Hell, he's a champion," Pat said
at the time. "He'd have gone six
rounds with Ray." Pat stayed loyal
to his Brockton roots until the end.

TOP RANK'S latest card, the aptly titled
"Sons of Legends", aired live from the
Foro Promo Casa and featured the
offspring of Mexican fistic heroes Julio
Cesar Chavez Snr and Jorge Paez in
separate matches.
Omar "El Businessman" Chavez
stopped overmatched Alberto Martinez
inside one round while Jorge Paez Jnr
needed only three stanzas to finish off
Rodrigo Juarez.
