Nelson's so close to beating Sanchez

Sweet homecoming for Mancini

Sibson opens door for Gumbs bid

SUGAR RAY LEONARD'S ring future remains in doubt, but
should the welter champ decide to box on he'll have a challenger
ready and waiting. Maybe two.
Detroit's tall Milton McCrory demerged as the logical No. 1
with a unanimous 10 round decision win over the useful Roger
Stafford, of Philadelphia, who was baffled and bewildered
before the ABC-TV cameras at Phoenix, Arizona.
But Donald Curry, a former crack amateur from Fort Worth,
Texas, can't be ignored. His match against Pipino Cuevas on
September 4 at San Antonio is a giant step up in class for the 20-
year-old Curry but one he certainly seems capable of winning.
Cuevas has a formidable reputation as a puncher but the fires
seem to have gone out a bit. He was floored and thrashed by
Stafford, who in turn lost clearly to McCrory.

THERE were four boxers who fought under the nom du ring of
"Young Corbett" and the original 'Gentleman Jim', heavyweight
champion of the world from 1892 to 1897, was the idol of them all.
The first of those to assume the name was George Green, a welter
from San Francisco, who used it as an inspiration, although it did
not get him to the top.

SALVADOR SANCHEZ of Mexico successfully defended
the WBC featherweight tide for the ninth time but had to
fight to the limit of his skills to beat challenger Azumah
Nelson of Ghana in the 15th and final round of a fiercely
exciting fight at Madison Square Garden.

RAY 'BOOM BOOM' MANCINI, roared
on by a hometown crowd of almost 20,000
under a bright blue sky at a local high school
football stadium, retained his WBA lightweight
title by pounding ex-champ Ernesto
Espana of Venezuela into defeat after six
rounds
