Arguello's daring bid to make history ends in a battering
Davies in a round back in 1974, he seemed to have closed
the book on the British flyweight division.
It had taken him seven years to find two challengers for his title,
and his immediate predecessor, Walter McGowan, had been
awarded his Lonsdale Belt by default since he did not have a single
contender in the three years of his championship reign.
On Tuesday, astonishingly, the little men take over Wembley
with British flyweights featured in three fights, including the two
main events, and with British champion Kelvin Smart and unbeaten
challenger Keith Wallace sharing a record payout of over
£20,000.
BRILLIANT Barry McGuigan continued his march towards
the British featherweight title with a fifth round
stoppage of a very game but outclassed Paul Huggins in
their scheduled 12-rounds final eliminator at Ulster Hall.
Referee James Brimmell stepped in after Huggins had
taken a series of blows to the head just as the bell to end the
round sounded. It was registered as a stoppage at the end of
the fifth round to, in the words of the formula, "save Huggins
from further unnecessary punishment".
CROYDON'S Dudley McKenzie gave an accomplished
display on his first professional appearance in Scotland when
he knocked out the durable Winston Davis of Rugby after
one minute 59 seconds of the sixth of their scheduled eight
threes main event.
MIAMI - November 12: Aaron Pryor proved his
worth as one of the ring's outstanding champions as
he overwhelmed Alexis Arguello in the 14th round of
a dramatic, thrilling fight at the Orange Bowl to retain
his WBA light-welter title and undefeated record.
Arguello, the WBC lightweight champion who was
attempting to become a world champion in four
weight divisions, was rescued by referee Stanley
Christodoulou of South Africa after one minute six
seconds of the 14th.
RAY "BOOM BOOM" MANCINI retained his WBA lightweight tide in
tragic circumstances when he stopped the official number one challenger
Duk Koo Kim of Korea in the 14th round in an open air setting at Caesars
Palace.
Kim, knocked down in the 14th, was taken from the ring on a stretcher
and rushed to hospital where he underwent an emergency operation to
remove a blood clot on the brain.
At the time of writing Kim was on a life support system and doctors were
not optimistic about his chances.
ENGLAND international John Hyland (St Ambrose)
confirmed a previous decision when he outpointed Grimethorpe
bantam Dave Ingram on the St Ambrose dinner/
charity show at Rotters, Liverpool.
Hyland, who beat Ingram in the A.B.A. Quarter finals last
season, notched a confident points win, outpacing and
outpunching Ingram to take a unanimous vote.
