Another quick win for Wallace

Hamsho wins after a bruising battle

Fred's still punching at 80!

AFTER strolling through the first six rounds of his British
light-heavyweight title fight with Dennis Andries like a man
who couldn't care much one way or the other, Leeds' Tom
Collins finally got to work behind a light but points-scoring
left jab and finished a deserving  points winner
over Hackney's Dennis Andries in a soporific 15-rounder at
the Bloomsbury Centre Hotel.

I HAVE always made it clear that this page is not confined
to the professional code. I enjoy hearing about former amateurs,
too, and this week I would like to pay a small tribute
to Fred Mallin, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday,
and who is probably the oldest living ex-ABA champion.
No doubt the statisticians will be quick to confirm or
contradict.

A BELOW-STRENGTH East Lanes team did well to collect
four tides against their strong West Lanes rivals in the
annual North West Counties championships at Liverpool
Stadium.
But their handicap of conceding three walk-overs meant that
West Lanes picked up the Jack Peel Memorial Trophy team award
for the 15th time in the championship's 17-season history.
The score-line was eight bouts to four so it was obvious that walkovers
for ABA champion John Lyon (Lowe House) at light-fly, St
Helens bantam Ray Gilbody and Holy Name middleweight Jimmy
Price, really helped.
Best for the Mersey squad were evergreen George Gilbody (St
Helens) at light-welter and Young England feather Dave Kenny
(Kirkby), with welter Bobby McKenley (Cavendish) and lightweight
Joey Jacobs (Higher Blackley) starring for the Manchester
contingent.

JOHN SAMUELS, ABA lightweight
finalist last year, crashed out of this season's
title chase at the preliminary stages, going
down on a second-round knockout against
Ely Star's powerful Tony McGlaggon.
Samuels, from Newport's Maindee Club, had
taken a standing count earlier in the round.
