Holmes proves he's a great champion

Old-timer Mack too good for McGough

Neilson rolls on and on

WELSH PIP SCOTS

IT was the richest fight in history and they deserved every one of the $20 million they
shared for a battle which ranks with the best. In the end the experience and all-round
class of WBC champion Larry Holmes came through the hard times for a 13th-round
technical knockout win, but the lasting image will be of the courage of challenger Gerry
Cooney.
He had been derided, not least by Holmes, as the Great White Hype, but he proved his
worth with a performance of memorable bravery, determination, and a surprising degree
of skill.

GREG PAGE suffered his first defeat when he was decisively
outpointed by Canadian Trevor Berbick on the undercard.
It was a frustrating performance by Page (Louisville,
Kentucky), who looked the part when he got up on his toes
and flicked out the jab — but he spent too much time posing
and allowed Berbick to rough him up.

THE extraordinary reign of Joey Mack as Midland Area
welterweight champion continues: at 36, he successfully
retained his tide (for the third time) against Martin
McGough, 25, who was retired by his corner after six
completed of ten (three minute) rounds at the Tower Ballroom.

THE come-from-behind knockout scored by Rafael "Bazooka" Limon
over Rolando Navarrate in the 12th round provided, in the words of CBSTV
commentator, Tim Ryan, an "unbelieveable finish."
Navarrete looked well on his way to retaining his WBC super
featherweight tide, but Limon kept throwing punches and nailed his man
when all looked lost.
