Hagler turns on the power
BRAXTON TAKES ON THE BULL
Gallant Cattouse runs out of rounds
London ABA Semi-finals Preview
DWIGHT BRAXTON makes his first defence of the World Boxing Council lightheavyweight
title against Jerry "The Bull" Martin, the Philadelphia plodder who has
already had two opportunities.
Martin was hammered in the 10th by Eddie Mustafa Muhammad for the WBA title and,
last September, lost in the 11th in a WBC championship challenge against Matthew Saad
Muhammad.
WILFREDO GOMEZ started his comeback at the
Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan with a workout
against JOSE "SPEEDY" GONZALEZ. Gomez had
Gonzalez down in round six and battered him
throughout the seventh.
"Speedy" decided to stay in his corner at the start of round
eight to become Wilfredo's 33rd victim in 35 fights.
The WBC super-bantamweight champion weighed seven
pounds over the 122 pounds limit for his division.
On the same show, BERNABE MONTANEZ stopped ISMAEL
SANTANA in round nine at featherweight, ALFREDO
ESCALERA weighed lOst 41bs in outpointing CLEMENTE
MUNOZ and ANDRES "PUPPY" HERNANDEZ
outpointed VICTOR BULTRON in a super-bantamweight
ten. Montanez shot to fame last October when he snapped
Carmelo Negron's unbeaten run.
U N L E A S H I N G a tremendous two-handed attack,
M A R V I N H A G L E R retained his world middleweight
title by crushing W I L L I A M "CAVEMAN" LEE in
just one min 7 sees before a packed crowd at Bally's
Park Place casino hotel and an ABC-TV audience of
millions.
It was the shaven-skulled Hagler's fourth defence of
the title he won from Alan Minter, and he gave an
awesome display of powerful, accurate punching from
his southpaw stance.
WILL an extra stone in weight swing the wheel of fortune
Jim McDonnell's way this year? Or is it to be a case of three
times'a bridesmaid for the triple London bantamweight
champion in his bid for that elusive ABA title at lightweight?
Twice McDonnell of St. Pancras has made it all the way to
Wembley to have his hopes dashed. Ominously', maybe, the goal
has receded for the once promising footballer who had a trial for a
Football League team before deciding to concentrate on boxing.
Last year he was eliminated in the English semi-finals.
