THOMAS HEARNS used boxing skill and a left jab to
capture the WBC light-middleweight title with a majority
15-rounds decision over Wilfred Benitez at the Superdome
in a tactical fight on the same bill as Gomez-Pintor.
Hearns, the former WBA welterweight champion, got off
to an early lead and came back to dominate the last third of
the fight after Benitez had scored well in the middle rounds.
Benitez, one of six fighters to be a world champ in three
weight divisions, was reduced to rushing and lunging in the
closing rounds as Hearns jabbed and countered to keep a
firm grip on the fight.

ONE of the most colourful careers in Danish boxing finally
came to an end, when 39-year-old Jorgen Hansen entered
the ring for the last time. In an atmosphere filled with
emotion, he clearly outpointed Spain's former world champion
Perico Fernandez over eight rounds, rushed out to get
dressed and have the usual bruises tended to - and then
returned to the ring half an hour later where he was
showered with gifts, speeches and minute-long ovations.

IT doesn't pay to take an opponent lightly. This was learned
the hard way by the former Dwight Braxton, now boxing
under his Islamic name of Dwight Muhammad Qawi, at
Atlantic city on November 20 as he overcame anxious
moments to grind down Eddie Davis and retain his World
Boxing Council light-heavyweight title.

THE NABC championships moves to the semi-finals stage
tomorrow (Saturday) when the North face the South West
and Midlands at the United Biscuit factory Manchester and
London clash with the South and South West at Redbridge
School Sports Centre, Southampton.

A NICE surprise in the post. Secretary Gilbert Allnutt sent
me the latest Newsletter from the Croydon Association, and
enclosed was a card stating that I had been elected a Life
Member. An honour and a privilege, Gilbert, for which I
thank everyone concerned, and I like to think that the hints
I dropped on this page from time to time helped to get the
Association started. They now have 102 members and 11
Associate members, a marvellous response in such a short
time.
