THIS MUST BE THE END FOR MAGRI

BRUNO'S ONE-PUNCH WINNER

BRIAN PIDGEN'S ABA FINAL PREVIEW

WORLD title contender Tony Sibson duly retained his
European middleweight title by halting awkward challenger
Jacques Chinon of France after one min 55 sees of the 10th
of their scheduled 12-rourder — but Sibson's sloppy performance
did little to enhi nee him as a threat to Marvin
Hagler.

THE crisp punch with which Maurice Hope dropped Rocky Mattioli in
the opening moments of their contest at San Remo on March 4, 1979 did
more than announce an imminent change of champion. It signified the
arrival of West Indian boxing at the highest level of international competition,
and introduced a distinctive type of title-holder.

HOW WOULD you feel if you were a young boxer, engaged to be married, and
one night in the opposite corner is your fiancee's uncle? And he's not only her
uncle, he's your idol. This was the situation facing former Belfast flyweight Jackie
Briers in September 1948, "uncle" being Jimmy Warnock, twice winner over
legendary world champion Benny Lynch.

WITH five reigning ABA champions now professionals and
another four having fallen on the long run in, the titles in
tonight's (Friday) ABA finals at Wembley Arena are the
most open for many years.
And London with a record contingent of finalists at eight
is poised ready to ^snatch a bag of them, even, feasibly the
majority.
That figure has, of course, to be measured against the
number of titles available. When the ABA championships
were initiated in 1881 they were of only four weights. Tonight,
with the addition of the new super-heavyweight class,
we shall be witnessing the first tournament at 12 categories.
The position is in stark contrast to three years ago when
London had only two finalists and no champion for the first
time in 24 years.

ANOTHER boxing bubble burst, another dream was shattered
when Davey Moore retained his WBA light
middleweight tide by knocking out Charlie Weir in 35 sees,
of the fifth round at die Ellis Park rugby stadium.
