A RARE moment for brave challenger Randy 'Tex' Cobb as he catches WBC heavyweight
champion Larry Holmes with a left hook. Cobb showed immense courage in becoming only the
second challenger to go the distance with Holmes - but he was given a one-sided pasting.

LARRY HOLMES did the expected by outclassing
Randall "Tex" Cobb in defence of his WBC
heavyweight title but, at 33, he may not be around
much longer.
"Right now, my future is getting started outside of
boxing, preparing for the future," Holmes said after
winning a unanimous 15-round decision over the durable
but plodding Cobb in front of a sparse crowd of
about 9,000 in the 55,000 seater Astrodome.
But Holmes said he still loved boxing. Promoter.
Don King talked of a title defence against European
champion Lucien Rodriguez of France as being next
for Holmes.

VETERAN campaigner Billy Waith leaned on the ropes and
shook his head in disbelief as referee Sid Nathan raised the
hand of opponent Sid Smith after an absorbing main event
at the Elephant and Casde Leisure Centre.

THOUGH British boxing has been frustrated throughout this century as dreams of
producing a successful heavyweight White Hope ended in nightmares, at least
Frank Bruno, our first Black Hope, won't be frustrated by the injustice of not
being allowed to fight for the tide of the country of his birth.

Hyams has died, age 72,
after a long illness. He campaigned
at every weight
from fly to light-heavy from
the 20s to the 40s, and in
1937 met Jock McAvoy for
the British middleweight
title, losing on a retirement
in the 11th round.
