Pride drives McKenzie on

SIBSON MAKES THE BIG BREAKTHROUGH

MAMBY HANGS ONTO CROWN

CABLE JUST MAKES IT

CLINTON McKENZIE established himself as one of the
proudest champions in British title history with two more
savage defences of his light-welterweight crown in 1981.
McKenzie is an enigma, a man of contrasts. He's a slick,
knowledgeable stylist who often prefers to stand and trade
full blooded shots with heavier hitters - and a quiet, philosophical
man capable of driving himself through the pain
barrier with a strange, illogical, stubborn pride.

THIS is a story about Jimmy Wilde, the greatest flyweight of all time. It has
never been told before because when it happened he was largely unknown to
press and promoters outside his native Wales and had yet to achieve fame and
fortune.

ORPINGTON'S Jimmy Cable survived
some anxious moments but
just about clung on to his unbeaten
record by edging out old rival Tony
Britton, Lewisham, after eight fast
rounds at the Concert Hall.

HARD fights plus apparent weight-making difficulties
caught up with MATTHEW SAAD MUHAMMAD in his
ninth defence of his WBC light-heavyweight title. Chunky,
muscled challenger DWIGHT BRAXTON slammed him
into a 10th round defeat at a packed Playboy Casino Hotel.

SUGAR Ray Leonard's
win over Thomas Hearns
was obviously the big fight
of 1981, but Salvador Sanchez's
victory over Wilfredo
Gomez was just as big
a feat in its way. The saddest
aspect of 1981. was the comeback
attempts made by Muhammad
Ali, Joe Frazier
and Miguel Canto, three
greats who tarnished their
image.
