M INTER GETS HIS WORLD CHANCE AT LAST

No problems for new-look Kiely

REPTON NEW BOY HOPE WINS DEBUT

BRIGHTON'S Tommy Kiely got rid of some of the ring rust in taking a clear
eight round decision over substitute Terry O'Connor at Merton Civic Hall.
Kiely (14-8) was to have met Denton Ruddock in defence of his Southern
Area title, but the bout was called off when the challenger hurt his neck
during training.

PARIS — December 10: British light-heavyweight
champion Bunny Johnson was outpointed in a 10-
rounds return by French hopeful Sylvain Watbled.
Bunny had previously kayoed Watbled with a tremendous
left hook to the head in a Paris fight earlier this year.
This time Watbled took no risks, and he set the seal on his win
with a knockdown in the ninth round, catching Bunny with a
left hook and right to the head.
Watbled kept his hands high throughout most of the fight and
Johnson had to work a lot to the body. It was a reasonably close
fight but Watbled clinched it with the knockdown and his wary
boxing.

LIGHT-MIDDLEWEIGHT Nick Wilshire and lightheavyweight
David Cross will return from the Yokohama
World junior championships with the most unexpected
Christmas gift for English amateur boxing of silver medals.
Few would have dared to expect even a bronze from our
relatively inexperienced team of four. Indeed the unknown
David Cross from Bridlington was only a hair-line selection over
Repton's Les Stewart.

REPTON'S latest capture, Gary Hope, who was born in
Liverpool, worked in the Bahamas and now lives in
Greenford, Middlesex, made a highly successful debut
for his new club at East India Hall, Poplar, on December
17, where he outpointed Birmingham international
Rupert Christie.

BRITISH middleweight champion Kevin Finnegan is the
official EBU co-nominee to fight for the vacant
European middleweight title.
Finnegan faces Frenchman Gratien Tonna for the title
in Paris on January 17.
The title was vacated by Alan Minter who is fast closing in on
a world title shot against undisputed champ Vito Antuofermo
of New York.
Finnegan lost to Tonna in Monte Carlo in May 1975, nearly
four years ago
