COWDELL CAN JAB HIS WAY TO GLORY
COCKNEYS SLUMP AGAINST THOSE STRONG KENYANS
THE BRITISH light-welterweight title changed hands in
a sensational 15-round war as Clinton McKenzie turned
in a determined performance to regain his old crown
from arch-rival Colin Power,
PROMOTER Mogens Palle gambled on matching his two chief draw-cards
against world title contenders from a higher division . . . and it paid off
brilliantly.
Light-middleweight no. 1 Ayub Kalule trounced WBC-ranked middleweight David
Love, winning by a massive margin on all three cards, while European welterweight
champion Jorgen Hansen effectively eliminated Kalule's chief rival in the world title
race, South African Gert Steyn, by outscoring him in the eight-rounds chief support in
the Randershallen.
NOTTINGHAM'S Dave Needham makes the first defence
of his crown against fellow Midland featherweight
favourite Pat Cowdell at Wolverhampton's Civic Hall on Tuesday.
And the clash has all the hall-marks of a classic confrontation
between two of boxing's most brilliant exponents.
IT was apparent to everyone who watched his fight with
Roberto Duran, that Carlos Palomino, former World
Boxing Council welterweight champion from Mexico
and California, had lost his zest for fighting.
Palomino realised it himself. Now, at 30, he has decided to
retire. He won the WBC title on June 22, 1976, at the age of 26,
by stopping John H. Stracey in the 12th round at Wembley
Arena and said soon afterwards that he'd retire by the age of 30.
The former champion is living up to his words. He was 30 on August 10.
IT'S all happening, isn't it! We've just had the Tribute
Night to George Marsden, thanks to Johnny Bartles and
other good lads from the Nottingham area. We've also
had the official unveiling of the Freddie Mills Memorial
in Bournemouth, and thanks are due to Danny Mahoney
and his mates for making this possible.
