COLIN POWERS gave a display of almost unbelievable
courage to regain the British light-welterweight title
from Clinton McKenzie at Wembley Conference Centre,
in one of the finest championship fights seen in this
country for many years.
It was a contest remarkable for the bravery of two
fighters prepared to throw and take punches beyond
normal limits of endurance.

| EVERYTHING went pretty much as planned for European middleweight
champion Alan Minter in his 10-round main event at the Conference Centre
against Mexican-American journeyman Rudy Robles.
Minter, who is marking time until his world title bid later this year, won
every round on referee Roland Dakin's 100-95 scoring, but Robles (who fights
out of Los Angeles) fully earned his ovation from a near-capacity crowd.

GIL CLANCY tapes Emile Griffith's fists ready for a gym
session. Clancy's credentials are impeccable, despite a scathing
attack by Don King in which Clancy was said to have
been 'made' by ' t w o black men', meaning Griffith and
Rodrigo Valdes.

JOHN L. GARDNER, the willing and gutsy heavyweight champion of Britain
and the Commonwealth, admits he isn't a one-shot puncher, but is confident
of solving a problem that has frustrated so many British heavyweights of the past.

CLEVER Reading heavyweight Les
Stevens looks likely to have just a little
too much experience and flair for
Brighton southpaw Tommy Kiely when
they meet at the Top Rank Suite,
Reading, on Bev Walker's promotion on
Monday.

HARTLEPOOL bantamweight JOHN
FEENEY retained his unbeaten record
when he closely but clearly outpointed
tough Newcastle featherweight ALAN
ROBERTSON in the eight threes main
event at the Great International Sporting
Club. It was his 12th pro win.
