THE TRAGEDY OF JOHNNY OWEN

Sibson set tough test

Larmour licked by smart Sims

White halted by cut eye

GORDON FERRIS is John L. Gardner's official challenger
for the British heavyweight tide, but his form in achieving
that status gives Gardner litde cause for concern.
Ferris (14st 13 lbs) fumbled to a points win over awkward
Brighton southpaw Tommy Kiely  in their 12-
rounds final eliminator at Maysfield Leisure Centre, but it
was a performance and a fight which reflected litde credit on
either man or on the state of British heavyweight boxing.

MANCHESTER light-heavyweight Danny Lawford produced the better
boxing to gain a hard fought eight round decision over Cardiff s
muscled Bonny McKenzie at the Anglo-American Sporting Club.
Referee Sid Nathan scored the bruising, if rather untidy, affair 79-78:
an assessment which met with a mixed reception.

THE show's on the road again when Muhammad Ali
bids to win the world heavyweight title for the fourth
time on Thursday in a specially built venue at Caesar's
Palace, Las Vegas.
Ali has already won the title an unprecedented three
times. He's the most popular and well-known champion
ever. Many reckon that at his peak no champ, past or
present, would have beaten him. His position of greatness is
assured.

DETROIT'S Hilmer Kenty retained his WBA lightweight
tide with an overwhelming fourth-round win over ex-champion
Ernesto Espana at the open-air Hyram Bithorn stadium
and now seeks to meet WBC champion Jim Watt for
the undivided title.
Kenty's manager, Emmanual Steward, said that Muhammad
Ali Sports Promotions are negotiating with Watt's
camp to put the fight on. "We have no objection to fighting
in Glasgow," manager Steward said.

VETERAN British light-heavyweight champion Bunny
Johnson and manager George Francis have amicably
parted company.
' Johnson's contract expires on October 12 and Francis
told Boxing News that he would not be asking the
champion to extend the partnership. But Johnson will
continue in the fight game and is due to box Tony
Mundine on October 19.
