CHARACTER and class earned Maurice Hope his finest
victory as he smashed aside^ the challenge of exchampion
Rocky Mattioli to retain his WBC lightmiddleweight
title at the Wembley Conference Centre.
Referee Arthur Mercante of New York waved Hope
away eight seconds from the end of the 11th round as
Mattioli, beaten this time beyond argument, sagged
back against the ropes after taking seven heavy shots to
the head without reply.
Mattioli, world champion from 1977-'79, announced
his retirement after the fight.

AGGRESSIVE Cornelius Boza-Edwards scored an easy
third round win over moderate Spaniard Manuel Velasquez
in their scheduled eight rounds support on the
world championship bill.
There were only four supporting bouts on the bill.
Uruguayan Manuel Lira failed to appear after being
booked for a fight with ex-British light-middleweight
champion Jimmy Batten and Welshman Bryn Jones
arrived seven pounds overweight for a fight with bantam
Gary Nickels, which the London fighter's manager
turned down.

EVERYONE loved old Matt Wells, right through his
illustrious amateur days; in the London Olympics of
1908; throughout his long and successful professional
career; during the time he trained, managed, promoted
and refereed; and during the years when he coached,
instructed and gave advice, never missing a day at one
gym or another, right up to his untimely death at the
age of 67.

UNBEATEN light-welterweight ALAN LAMB
Droduced an impressive display of pressure fighting
to halt game GRANVILLE ALLEN in the fifth
of a scheduled eight rounder at the World Sporting
Club.
