Mittee gets his big chance

LIGHT-WELTERWEIGHT Sylvester Mittee, after spending so long in the shadow
of the glittering stars of the Terry Lawless stable, gets his own chance for glory on
Tuesday. For Mittee, from Bethnal Green, meets former European champion
Colin Power over 10 rounds in an official eliminator for the British title. The
winner goes on to face Des Morrison in a final eliminator.
It looks the most attractive pairing of the night, between two gifted professionals equally
hungry for success, with victory placing either man reach of a British title challenge.
For Mittee, the chance to establish himself as a worthy contender comes after only nine
professional outings, spanning a total of 16 rounds of complete boxing — statistics which
fully illustrate the former Olympic representative's hitting power.
WELSH welterweight Colin Jones faces a tough tune-up
for his forthcoming British title challenge when he takes
on Cardiff craftsman Billy Waith at the World Sporting
Club on Monday.
Jones, competing in his 13th professional fight, has
already proved his ability against battlers such as Joey
Mack and Salvo Nuciforo; it will be interesting to see
how he copes with an intelligent boxer such as Waith.
ALTHOUGH I would not argue w i t h my colleagues over
the choice of the top ten overseas fighters, I feel either
Eusebio Pedroza or Ricardo Cardona might have deserved
a mention.
Pedroza continues to look a class fighter with four
successful defences last year in Tokyo, Panama City,
Houston and Papua New Guinea, and stopped all his
challengers.

BARRY McGUIGAN was much too skilful and
strong for rugged RICHIE FOSTER, reigning
Irish bantamweight champion, in the featherweight
headliner on the Dublin-Ulster show at
the National Stadium, writes THOMAS
MYLER.
DAVE ALLEN boxed coolly to take a comprehensive points win
over Richard Avery after eight (three minute) rounds at the
Adulte Ballroom.
With the exception of the seventh, a round in which Avery
pressured his man to the ropes for sustained periods, Allen
Conisbrough, enjoyed an edge in authority and showed a range
of jabs and hooks to both head and body.
