CHARLIE MAGRI made expectedly short work of the heavily outgunned but
courageous Mexican Enrique Castro of Tijuana whom he stopped in two mins
10 seconds of the first of a scheduled 10-rounder on a night of fiascos at the
Albert Hall, writes Tim Mo.

THE tremendous fan interest Danish boxing has enjoyed over the
past few years reaches a crescendo tonight (Friday) when, for the
first time ever, two Danes clash for a European title. Veteran
welterweight champion Jorgen Hansen, 37, will try to stave off
the challenge of up-and-coming Hans Henrik Palm, 24, in a fight
where the result is awaited with more than usual anticipation even
outside boxing circles.

FORMER world lightweight champion Ken Buchanan,
on the comeback trail at 35, keeps the
ring-rust at bay with a 10-rounder against substitute
Des Gwilliam on Monday.
Buchanan, from Edinburgh, still hopes to fight for
the European title before the end of the year, though he
faces a tough tune-up in 26-year-old Gwilliam.
The Scot was to have met unbeaten James Cooke but
the bout was scrapped because the Coventry youngster
retired from the ring a week ago.

AT THIS time of the year I am usually one of a small committee which prepares a
list of boxers as a guide to members of the London Ex-Boxers' Association when
they vote for the Best Boxer of the Year.
This year there will be no competition. Instead the Dave Crowley Memorial Belt
will go to Johnny Owen by unanimous approval of the 235 members who attended
the October meeting.

BANTAMWEIGHT Bobby Jones, England's great
competitor in foreign rings — although never the
winner of an ABA title - registered his third and
finest European gold meal triumph in the tough East
German TSC tournament.

PRESENTATION night for Essex Amateur Boxing Association
turned into something of a celebration for the
Moody family, with brothers John and George both collecting
awards shortly after the announcement that
middleweight John had been selected for the England
sauad.
