KIRKLAND Laing should realise by now
that talent alone will not take him to the
top of pro boxing.
In recent years, we had another welterweight
champion of Great Britain, namely
Wally Swift. He also had talent, along with
dedication.

THE regular punters at the Olympic Auditorium in Los
Angeles, who are accustomed to Mexican flyweights
with 46-inch chests, are not going to believe their eyes
when our own Johnny Owen strips off there on September
12 for his world title bid against Lupe Pintor
but they'd be ill-advised to judge too much on appearances.

"SOME men are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust
upon them." This latter observation by William Shakespeare can be said to have
applied to Pat Butler, the young Leicester boxer who reached his peak in the early
1930's.

inside the distance, Henry Cooper was back at
Harringay for the opening promotion of 1955, in
February, but encountered unexpected opposition
from Cliff Purnell of Bath.

canvas in round five, but found that southpaws
present different problems than orthodox fighters.

ATLANTIC CITY  August 9 Cornelius Boza-Edwards,
southpaw lightweight from Uganda and Harrow, fought
with ability and courage but found Alexis Arguello a bit
too much for him and was halted on a corner retirement
at the end of round eight in their nationally televised
scheduled 10-rounder at Resorts International Hotel.
