Conteh hits jackpot
BRITISH middleweight champion Kevin Finnegan
has a chance to turn back the clock at the final
hour when he meets French slugger Gratien
Tonna for the vacant European middleweight title
at Coutetin in Paris on Thursday.
Luck may have turned Kevin's way at last in a
career which has been marked by a major misfortune
and several minor pieces of ill-luck.
When Kevin beat Tony Sibson for the British
title in the last Albert Hall show of 1979 he cleared
the way to greater things. For, who knows, even a
world title chance could await the old war-horse in
1980.
SKILFUL Scottish lightweight Dave McCabe clinched a
fight for the British title with a bloody and, at times,
brutal points victory over gutsy Martin Galleozzie at
Blazers Night Club, Windsor
DANNY "Little Red" Lopez will defend his WBC
featherweight title against Salvador Sanchez of
Mexico, the WBC's official No. 1 challenger, at Phoenix
on February 2.
RON LYLE'S shock loss at the hands of Lynn Ball must
surely mark the end of an era.
With Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton and Earnie Shavers all
gone it was fitting that in the last month of the 1970s Lyle
should also fade out.
