BOXING NEWS BRITISH TITLE FIGHT SPECIAL

Robinson loses out in weigh-in dispute

JUST PERFECT, BATTEN

Kalule set for an easy title defense

HAGLER GETS IN THE GROOVE

TIM REYNOLDS ON THE LONDON AMATEUR SCENE

BRITISH featherweight champion Pat Cowdell
battled his way into the sporting record books by
halting gutsy Midland rival Dave Needham at the
Civic Hall.
Nottingham-born Needham was pulled out by his
corner at the end of 12 rounds — giving the champion
ownership of a Lonsdale Belt in record time.
The voluntary defence, against the man from
whom Cowdell took the title last November, was far
from memorable, though the champion fought with
cool efficiency before moving into overdrive in the
12th.

COLIN JONES, dynamic British welterweight champion
from Gorseinon, gave further evidence of the power in
his right hand when he devastatingly kayoed American
Richard House with a single punch to the head in the
main event at the Albert Hall.

NORTHERN AREA heavyweight champion George
Scott failed his big test when he tangled with Central
Area champion Terry Mintus in their official eliminator
at the High Pit Social Club, the Leeds man coming out
of the ring with the decision at the end of 10 hard, gruelling
rounds that had the capacity crowd roaring.

Gloucesters' gritty Irishman Peter Hanlon who gets
the ticket to Moscow after being awarded yet another
majority decision over the classy but luckless Scot Ian
McLeod (Sparta) in the sudden-death Olympic featherweight
trial on the ABA juniors programme.

NICK WILSHIRE's European juniors
gold medal triumph has sealed his
Moscow team place and highlighted two
selection blunders which could prove
highly embarrassing for the British ABA,
and possibly even involve them in legal
wranglings.
