TIM REYNOLDS ON THE LONDON AMATEUR SCENE
JOHN CONTEH, the fighter who turned his back
on a fortune when he gave up his WBC light-heavyweight
title on a point of principle, lost his
third and surely final bid to regain it when Matthew
Saad Muhammad smashed him to humiliating
fourth-round defeat in the plush setting of the
Resorts International Hotel.
MANCHESTER'S Eddie Smith (11-10) halted the winning run of veteran
American middleweight Johnny Heard, Chicago (11-7*2) with a hollow
victory on Liverpool's Grand National week show.
Smith won when Heard quit on his stool at the end of the fifth round,
manager Jack Cowen indicating to referee Ron Hackett that it was
impossible for his fighter to continue because of impaired eyesight.
It was typical of the troubles that beset what was to have been the
star-spangled show of the Liverpool season. American heavy Bruce
Grandham was a late non-starter through injury, so too was Croydon's
Frankie Lucas and on the day of the show Blackpool light-heavy Steve Hill
withdrew with flu.
CANADIAN boxing suffered a big blow with the death
of Roger Larivee. Roger was one of the best cut men in
the world, and in great demand as a corner man.
He managed Bill Drover, Donato Paduano, Dave
Hilton and Marshall Butler, and was a frequent visitor to
our shores.
