THE difference between a
genuine world-class boxer
and a good club fighter
was unequivocably and
brutally demonstrated
when Frankie Mitchell
dismantled crosstown rival
Anthony Boyle for an
11th round stoppage at
the Blue Horizon.

THE announcement that FRANKIE MITCHELL would be
challenging JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ for the WBC lightwelterweight
title, August 1, at the Las Vegas Hilton, took
the Philadelphia boxing community by total surprise.
Mitchell is replacing Eric Podolak, ruled unsuitable by
the Nevada commission.
Mitchell has never fought at the light-welter limit, and
despite a spot of trouble making weight for the Anthony
Boyle bout, is a natural 135-pounder. It will also be the
first time Mitchell has fought for Don King.

THE WHOLE of the Zambian Boxing Board has resigned. It may
have followed the James Tapisha episode where the totally inept
Zambian was endorsed as a challenger to Chris Pyatt for the
Commonwealth middleweight title. Tapisha had managed seven
wins in nine fights spread over seven years.
A new champion was crowned in Ndola on May 26 Jaineck
"Suzyo Malde" Chinyanta won the Zambian lightweight title
when he knocked out the champion Charles Shiliya in the eighth
round. Both fighters were on the canvas. A light-middleweight
bout saw Henry Kalunga flatten Elias Chikwanda in the first
round. A super-bantamweight ten ended in the fifth when Steve
Maselino halted Stan Mwila.

I HAVE received a report from Buck Taylor of the Plymouth EBA
Annual Reunion (their tenth), and he writes: "A very successful
evening. Our Guests of Honour were Flash Acton and Vernon
Penprase, careers spanning two eras, which were brilliantly
outlined by our able PRO Bruce Jones. We were supported by
EBAs from Cornwall, Bournemouth and Torquay.
"Roy Coote introduced the Cornish lads, who included John
Soloman, Jimmy Miller, Eric Bradshaw, Fred Edwards, Len Magee,
Roy Nottle, John Sandow, Sam Kitts and Bill Calloway, who
incidentally was Roy Coote's first opponent many years ago for a
purse of a few shillings.

WHEN I received a letter from Camberley ABC inviting me to
pay them a visit as I was bound to be impressed, my first
reaction was "That's a hell of a way to go just to be
impressed."
In the event it was not as far as I first thought, only 35
miles and it was definitely worth the journey. The gym itself
is large and well-appointed with a good-sized ring and
plenty of equipment, the boxers dedicated and the trainers
competent.

THERE will certainly be some sort of fizzy drink in Birmingham next month
to celebrate the return of Great Britain Olympic light-flyweight hopeful
Rowan Williams, because for the last few months fizzy drinks and other
things have been missing from his life.
The 24-year-old Small Heath boxer, with steely determination, has been
training and maintaining his weight for the most important date in his
boxing career - to win an Olympic medal in Barcelona.
