HONEYGHAN FOR CARLO

ROSS HALE moved a step closer to challenging for
the British light-welterweight crown after outpointing
Birmingham's Malcolm Melvin in their eliminator.
Only a single round separated the pair on referee
Adrian Morgan's card as he scored 98-97i/2 in
favour of Hale.
The Bristol southpaw had been well prepared for
this encounter and received an important psychological
boost at the morning weigh-in when Melvin
failed to weigh inside the ten stone limit at his first
visit to the scales. A run around the newly opened
Rainbow Cabaret Club and a long skipping session
removed the excess from Pat Cowdell's fighter,
enabling the Midland Area champion to make the
weight.

BRITISH welterweight champion Gary Jacobs has to go
into the other man's backyard in his latest attempt to
win a title. He meets French hopeful Ludovic Proto for
the vacant European crown at the Stade Pierre de
Coubertin in Paris tonight (Friday)

WBC International heavyweight champion Herbie
Hide had to survive a few scares before retaining his
title against the rugged Australian southpaw Craig
Petersen (15st 10 lbs), who floored him in the first
round and gave him the toughest test of his unbeaten
18-fight career before being stopped, his right eye
totally closed, in the seventh of the scheduled 12
rounds.

LENNOX LEWIS did the bulk of his training for Razor Ruddock
at Caesars Brookdale-On-The-Lake Resort, a honeymoon hideaway
nestled in the Pennsylvania foothills which specialises
in sunken bath-tubs, heart-shaped beds and mirrored ceilings.
But despite the fact some of the newlyweds found time to
attend his sparring sessions, there were few love taps
exchanged inside the ring.

CHAM JOOF is an unusual name for an unusual character.
A young man who lives and breathes boxing,
Cham won the London ABA light-welterweight title
this year before losing to Adrian Stone in the English
