BRITAIN'S FORGOTTEN HEAVYWEIGHT TAKES CENTRE STAGE

Core's equipped to keep crown

Collins likely to emerge as next WBO title challenger

Russians struggle to find their feet

Bott fails to regain crown

THE power struggle over who runs Russian boxing
may soon be over. The EBU was now decided to effectively
recognise the Russian Boxing Union by rating
their boxers and to ignore the Eastern European
Union which is currently recognised by the WBC.
The EBU will be hoping to get the WBC to go along with
them but it is by no means certain they will. The WBC still
recognises the so-called Asian Boxing Council, which has a
Thai representation, and the OPBF which includes the real
Thai board.

AMERICAN promoter Don King won the purse bids
to stage Nigel Benn's WBC super-middleweight title
defence against No.l challenger Henry Wharton
from Leeds.
King outbid English promoters Frank Warren and Mickey
Duff and looks likely to put the match on in London in early
February.

WHEN welterweight Andreas Panayi lost his pro
fessional debut to Trevor Ambrose in November
1990, the Greek Cypriot probably offered one of the
more original excuses for his fifth-round stoppage
defeat.
