WITH the news that Madison Square Garden's boxing
department would be closing operations in the
summer, fans at the Ramada Ballroom were in an
uncharacteristically subdued mood especially after
Freddie Liberatore's escape against Bronx's ordinary
Joseph Figueroa for the vacant New York State
super-featherweight title.

HOMETOWNER Cesar "La Cobrita"
Soto (8st 81bs) made the second
defence of his Mexican super-bantamweight
title with a brutal threeknockdown,
second round knockout
over game Luis Ruiz Lizarraga (8st
9lbs), Merida, Mexico.

A POLISHED and skilful boxing display gave Sam
Glasser the decision (over Barry Scott), title and trophy
for the best stylist of the evening at the NABC
Class A finals at the Marriott Hotel with Kevin Lear,
Stuart Elwell and Francie Doherty all completing the
treble of championship wins in the one season.

LARRY BARNES won the NABF welterweight crown
at the Paramount but had to hold off a furious rally
from veteran Harold Brazier over the final three
rounds to capture a split 12-round decision.
Barnes came into the fight rated fifth by the IBF
and 10th by the WBC, but his hard work was nearly
erased when he ran out of gas.
