Casual Barrett fails to hit his best form

It's a rough ride for tough Armour

It's third time lucky for Jacobsen

FOLLOWING THE ABA CHAMPIONSHIP TRAIL

SHOWING no ill-effects from his 11th round stoppage
defeat by Nigel Benn for the WBC super-middleweight
title in December, Welshman Nicky Piper
picked up the vacant WBA Penta-Continental crown
with an embarrassingly one-sided 12-round points
win over Argentina's Miguel Maldonado at the Free
Trade Hall

TONY LOPEZ successfully defended his WBA
lightweight championship title with a 12 round
unanimous decision over Dlngaan Thobela of South
Africa.
In making his first defence of the title that he won
last October, Lopez was wise to do it in Sacramento.
That's the Sacramento of old, mind you, during the
days of the wild west when lawlessness prevailed.
Because what Lopez got away with in capturing the
decision was nothing short of highway robbery.

FORMER Midlands ABA heavyweight champion Paul
Oko crashed out of this season's title race when Willenhall's
Neil Simpson forced him to retire in the
third round at the Triumph club.
Oko, 1991 Midlands champ but missing last year,
was having his first contest for some time. Reports
of the quality of his fitness appear to have been
somewhat exaggerated.
