THE same calmness which helped
Venezuelan Crisanto Espana keep his
composure to overcome American
Meldrick Taylor seven months ago,
ironically proved a hindrance in his
first defence of the WBA welterweight
title at the Ulster Hall.

BRITAIN is rapidly becoming known as the home
of the WBO!
Of 28 world title fights sanctioned by the WBO in 1992,
exactly HALF Involved British boxers.
And of those 14 championships contests, 13 took place
in Britain. The exception was the Chris Eubank-Ronnle
Essett fight in Qulnta Do Lago.

CHRIS PYATT makes his second "world" title challenge at a different
weight when he takes on Sumbu Kalambay of Italy for the vacant
WBO middleweight crown at the Granby Halls, Leicester, on Tuesday
(May 19).
Pyatt met John David Jackson for the WBO's list title in his hometown in
October 1990, but couldn't make his advantage tell and was soundly outpointed
over 12 rounds.

GREG PAGE, who briefly held the WBA heavyweight
title back in another era, cruised through a one-sided
workout against fat Mike Faulkner, from Memphis,
on a night of abject mismatches at the Sands.
Faulkner (17st 91bs) stayed on his stool at the end
of the seventh and referee Richard Steele, as they
say in America, stopped it on the advice of the corner.
Steele should have called a halt three or four
rounds earlier. It was set for 10.

THERE will be no more boxing at New York's Madison
Square Garden after a United States senate investigation
into boxing alleged there was a link between boxing
and organized crime.
It was suggested that fighters, including James Buddy
McGirt, were associated with organized crime
although the former IBF light-welter and WBC welterweight
champion denied the allegations.
But competition from the casinos in Atlantic City, a
lack of interest in non-heavyweight fights and less
than stable financial conditions contributed to the
decision.

BEFORE WHAT seemed to be a depressingly low turnout for
the provincial debut of the ABA finals at the National Indoor
Arena there was an impressive first-time title win for David
Starle, a surprise victory for hard-punching Jason Cook, while
Joe Calzaghe made the post-war record books with his third
consecutive ABA title at a different weight.
