boxing news 1972

BRITAIN got off to a bright start on this first day of the mammoth Olymic
boxing event. Cardiff flyweight Maurice O'Sullivan, of Irish parentage,
and featherweight Billy Taylor, an unemployed Hackney window cleaner,
both scored points victories.

RALPH EVANS, 18-year-old light-flyweight from
Hampshire via the Welsh valleys, continued
Britain's success in the preliminary rounds of this
record-entry Olympic tournament.

CRAWLEY light-middle Alan Minter landed his celebrated boom-boom combination
punches to smash Reginald Ford (Guyana) into spectacular two-
-ound defeat as Britain continued to advance in the Olympics.
Bill Knight,

OVER the years the Ice Stadium in Nottingham
has been the scene of many memorable championship
battles. Promoter Reg King has the proud
record of having staged nearly 50 title bouts there,
and to the credit of the Midlands fight fraternity
the vast majority have brought near capacity
houses.

TIM WOOD, 21-year-old ABA heavyweight champion from Leicester, who
had the bitter blow of being left out of Britain's Olympic squad for Munich,
has now signed to fight as a professional, writes Steve Fagan.

AT WEMBLEY on September 26, when Chris Finnegan
climbs into the ring to challenge champion Bob Foster,
he will be bidding to become the third Briton to win the
undisputed world light-heavyweight title.

RUBEN OLIVARES at last fulfilled his date with Godfrey Stevens in Monterrey.
It had three times been post-dated until the issue was fight or pay.
Olivares fought and earned his purse. The alternative was a 12,000 dollar
damage award to the promoter.
