Olivares' career in tatters

Charters so close to glory

TOUGH MARCOS RETAINS TITLE

NIGEL BENN is giving up on the middleweight division in
pursuit of rivals Chris Eubank and Michael Watson, the
only men to have beaten him, in the super-middleweight
division.
The former WBO champion makes his debut at 12st in
Brentwood in October when he meets former WBC supermiddleweight
title challenger Dario Matteoni of Argentina.

I AM almost tempted to feel sorry for Hugo Olivares. When I read that the Bolivian
was to challenge Gilberto Dele for the WBA light-middleweight title, I compared him
to the Paraguayan Rafael Lovera who was given a shot at the vacant WBC
light-flyweight title on the basis of a false record.
A number of people have been involved in checking the record submitted to the
promoters. This showed that Olivares had scored 25 wins, 20 inside the distance, and
was authenticated by the Bolivian Federation. The investigations are not yet
completed, but enough evidence is available to prove that many of the fights on the record
never took place.

SUCCESSIVE withdrawals by Michael Watson, Steve Collins, Hero! Graham and
Francesco Dell'Aquila have allowed Alfreton's low profile John Ashton in as a
surprise challenger for the vacant European middleweight title tomorrow night
(August 24) in Pesaro, Italy.
It is the first part of an ambitious double title bid by the Midlander as he plans
to take on, and beat, two fighters of indisputable world class within 38 days.
But before he can look ahead to a clash with British champion Graham in
October, in the opposite corner tomorrow stands former WBA champion Sumbu
Kalambay.

NEWCASTLE'S Paul Charters came desperately close
to winning the European lightweight title, outboxing
champion Antonio Renzo of Italy for 10 rounds before
the heat caught up with him and he was knocked out in
the 11th.

IT IS nostalgia time again. A time to look back and
convince myself that those were the good old days.
This time I am looking back to 1975 when Muhammad
Ali, Carlos Monzon, Roberto Duran, Alexis Arguello
and Miguel Canto were world champions and that is
enough to convince me particularly with others such as
Carlos Zarate, Danny Lopez, Wilfred Benitez and
Larry Holmes waiting in the wings.

IF YOU are ever in the Ashford area of Kent, pop in to
the Queens Arms, Egerton Forstall, for a pint of
Bombardier bitter. It has won the Monde Selection Gold
Medal for the past five years, and was named after
former heavyweight champion Bombardier Billy
Wells. By a coincidence the landlady, Valerie Hogben,
is the daughter of the late Bombardier. An even bigger
concidence — the bitter comes from the Charles Wells
Brewery of Bedford.
