REVIEW OF THE AMATEUR SEASON
THE 21-year-old boy heard a sound that fascinated him on a Monday afternoon in
1948. The more he heard it, the closer he wanted to get to it. The boy went to the
balcony of the Madison Square Boys Club in New York City, and saw another
youngster hitting the light bag. The boy stood still, watching in amazement, until the
training session was over.
The trainer at the Boys' Club, Ashley Martela, walked over to the boy and invited
him to attend the following session on Thursday. The boy accepted, on the premise
that he would be taught how to punch the light bag. That is how Carlos Ortiz
embarked on a great career in boxing.

WITH OUR amateurs now virtually operating over a
twelve month calendar, August was the only month in the
1990/91 season in which there was a break for them in
international events. Travelling to all parts of the world,
there was an impressive collection of medals for the top
stars.
The international championship parade was headed
up by a brilliant gold medal for Alan Vaughan in the
World Juniors in October and then more recently in May
Paul Griffin became the first European gold medallist
from Ireland since 1949.
