THE OFTEN dangerous combination of bravery and durability
carried Londoner Mickey Hughes through 12 one-sided rounds for
the Commonwealth welterweight championship against clever but
moderate-hitting Canadian Donovan Boucher at York Hall.
His technical limitations, though, saw him convincingly outpointed,
referee John Coyle marking it 1 I&ti-IWA which, if
anything, looked slightly generous to the former Olympic representative
and ABA champion.
Remarkably, Hughes even stuck out his arm at the finish,
probably by instinct, but there was no way he was close to being the
winner. It was his first loss after a run of seven wins since joining the
Matchroom stable.

LOCAL light-welterweight contender
Rockin' Rodney Moore (right)
ravaged Puerto Rico's Sammy
Fuentes with an explosive burst of
power punching to score a secondround
stoppage before a large and
lively crowd at the Blue Horizon.

FROM THE tender age of 17 Brian Brazier has been in
uniform, that's almost all his adult life. He served 22
years in the Army, and for the past five years has been a
prison officer. During that time he managed to fit in a
successful amateur and professional career as a boxer,
starting when he was ten and finished when he was 24.
